The terms age spots, sun spots, freckles, lentigines, solar lentigos and liver spots refer to the brown spots we see on sun damaged skin. They tend to appear on the areas of the body receiving the most amount of sun, for example, on the top of the hands, face, shoulders, chest and arms.

Sun spots are caused by the over production of melanin or damaged cells producing melanin pigment (brown pigment). Age spots are caused by prolonged and repeated sun exposure or sun burn that usually appear later in life.
