As you get older, your skin naturally thins becoming less elastic and more fragile while decreasing the production of natural oils. This results in dryer skin and wrinkles. Fat in the deeper layers of the skin, which gives the skin a plump appearance, lessens causing loose, saggy skin resulting in more pronounced lines and wrinkles. Facial movements, such as smiling and squinting, can cause some facial wrinkles, over time. Heredity also plays a part in the aging process.
Exposure to UV light breaks down the skin’s connective tissue-collagen and elastin fibers. Without supportive connective tissue the skin loses its strength and flexibility. With the loss of the flexibility and strength, the skin prematurely sags and wrinkles.
The normal aging process of your skin can also be accelerated by smoking, contributing to wrinkles. This may be due to a lack of oxygen in the blood supply.
